Very much an oasis in the middle of the desert, Puchang – located in Turpan Valley, China’s Xinjiang province - now comprises approximately 100 hectares of vineyards which produce up to 130,000 bottles each year. Puchang was first established in 1975. In 2008, Hong Kong business man, Mr. K.K. Cheung purchased the estate, giving it a new direction as one of the first organic wine producers in China.

Puchang focuses on organic viticulture and winemaking with unwavering dedication and care under quality management. It also works with distinctive local grapes to present the taste of Xinjiang terroir. Thanks to the extreme desert climate, this land is almost entirely free of pests. Puchang is certified by ECOCERT as being organically maintained, which is an indication of its fine standard at the international level.

Deep ruby-red. Clean and ripe aromas and flavours of dark berries and flint are lifted by a bright violet top note.Fresh and juicy, with nicely harmonious acidity providing clarity and cut to the ripe blue and red fruit flavours on the long finish. Here the acidity is much better integrated than in many other Chinese Cabernet Sauvignon wines and the fruit is also riper than most.

"Puchang’s 2016 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon has a very deep garnet appearance (with only a little orange to the rim). On the nose, this is showing some evolution with some tertiary leather, mushroom and dark soy sauce combining with a core of mellowing, super ripe cassis and black cherry fruit complemented by distinct savory new oak (toastiness, clove, smoke). On the palate, this is immensely extracted and very full-bodied with abundant, angular tannins, some supporting acidity and distinct 14.5% alcohol—although the alcohol is better integrated here than in the 2016 regular Cabernet Sauvignon. This huge structure does have some decent concentration to flesh out the burly bones, but I’m still wondering if Turpan as a unique basin region—underneath sea level—might be better suited to Caucasian and some Mediterranean varieties rather than the likes of Cabernet Sauvignon." - Tasted on Jan 14, 2022 by Edward Ragg
