Domaine Georges Noellat Grands Echezeaux Grand Cru 2011

Maxime Cheurlin has revived the Domaine Georges Noëllat since 2010, earning praise from critics and collectors. Growing up in Champagne, he returned to Burgundy at 19 and has elevated the winery's reputation. With a bold, sensual style, he is considered the younger version of Sylvain Cathiard. The estate has excellent terroirs, and Cheurlin has focused on optimal cellar conditions and barrel selection to fully express each vineyard. The hot 2019 vintage produced low yields but high quality, with slow ripening allowing for perfect grape structure. Despite the challenges, the wines are remarkably fresh.

Domaine Georges Noellat is a highly regarded producer in the Côte de Nuits region of Burgundy. The Grands Echezeaux Grand Cru vineyard is considered one of the finest Grand Cru sites in Burgundy, known for producing complex, age-worthy Pinot Noir wines.The 2011 vintage in Burgundy was challenging, with a variable growing season that led to lower yields. However, the best producers were able to craft elegant, balanced wines that showcase the pure expression of Pinot Noir. 

As a Grand Cru wine, the Domaine Georges Noellat Grands Echezeaux 2011 would be expected to display exceptional depth, concentration, and nuanced flavors of red and black fruits, spices, minerals, and earthy/mushroom notes. The wine would likely benefit from extended cellaring to allow the complex flavors and silky tannins to fully integrate and develop.

The Grands Echézeaux from Domaine Georges Noëllat is also produced from vines in excess of eighty years of age, and the 2011 was also still in barrel and showing very good potential, despite being a touch reduced and ready for its racking (which was scheduled for the week after my visit). The deep and classy nose under the touch of reduction is a fine mélange of red and black cherries, venison, red plums, woodsmoke, a fine base of soil, Vosne spices and cedary wood. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, pure and very suave on the attack, with fine mid-palate depth, lovely focus and a bit of ripe tannin to resolve on the very long and classy finish. This will be a lovely example as well. (Drink between 2022-2050)
