A blend of 50 percent Syrah (2015 vintage) from 60-plus-year-old vines from the Northern Rhône, and 50 percent Grenache (2016 vintage) from 80-plus-year-old vines from the Southern Rhône. The Syrah comes from twelve parcels, from various Terroirs including granite, loess and sand, and was aged in French oak for 14 months. The Grenache comes from 13 parcels, from various Terroirs including galets, gravel, sand and Urgonian limestone, and was aged in concrete tanks. SM stands for the Latin words ‘septentrional’, referring to the Northern Rhône and ‘meridional’, or the Southern Rhône.

“A huge nose of cassis, ground black pepper, garrigue, and olive tapenade gives way to a ripe, rounded, medium to full-bodied effort that has good acidity, building tannin, a seamless, light texture, and a great finish. It's a singular wine that has a big kiss of Northern Rhône Syrah with a touch of the rounded, sexy, opulent style of the south. It's going to drink nicely for a decade.”
