The most famous and well-known wine from the Jura region is undoubtedly the Vin Jaune (Yellow Wine), but there is another wine that most people may not have heard of, as its export is very limited. This wine is called the Vin de Paille (Straw Wine).
The Vin de Paille is made using Chardonnay, Sauvignon, and Poulsard grapes. The harvested grapes are placed on straw mats or hung to dry for 2-3 months, during which time the water content in the grapes is lost, and the sugar content increases. The grapes are then pressed around Christmas to the end of January, with 100 kilograms of grapes yielding only 15-18 liters of grape juice, resulting in an extremely low yield. The wine is then fermented to an alcohol content of 15-17%, and subsequently aged in oak barrels for three years before bottling.
This wine has an incredibly small production, with only about 3,200 bottles produced per hectare of grapes. As a result, the price is quite high, and the total annual production in the entire Jura region is only about 100,000 bottles, making it almost non-existent in the export market, as the region cannot even meet its own demand.
