The Macallan was one of the first distillers in Scotland to be legally licensed. Since then we have built a reputation as one of the world’s leading single malt whiskies. The creation of The Macallan draws on the vital contributing influences of Spain, North America and Scotland - and of their respective natural raw materials, combined with traditional methods and craftsmanship.
The Macallan distillery was founded by Alexander Reid, a barley farmer and school teacher. The original name of the area was “Maghellan”, taken from the Gallic word “magh”, meaning fertile ground and “Ellan”, from the Monk St.Fillan - who held a close association with the church that stood in the grounds of The Macallan Estate until 1400. Farmers had been making whisky on their Speyside farms in the area for centuries, using their surplus barley during the quieter winter months.
A rare, dark, and smoky character. With a surprising and distinctive attitude, The Macallan Rare Cask Black is a whisky unlike any other.
This whisky tells a different story of The Macallan spirit and casks, but more than that, it tells a story of rarity. Select casks at The Macallan Estate have contributed to the creation of this distinct whisky; from time to time their Whisky Master Team discovers casks maturing in the warehouses which stand out from the others. These exceptionally rare casks of The Macallan have an intense sweet raisin flavour, and a rich velvety mouthfeel.
These casks remain untouched in the dark warehouses of The Macallan under the watchful eye of the Whisky Mastery Team until they are ready to be released.
This spirit matures in American and European oak sherry-seasoned casks, with its peat smoke character gained from exceptionally rare, aged stocks of peated distillation. Unexpected and distinctive in flavour with full bodied richness from The Macallan spirit, Rare Cask Black is an unusual smoky single malt that tells a story of creativity and innovation.
