Lisini Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2006
The Lisini estate covers an area of 154 hectares, located south of the town of Montalcino, 8 km from the town and 1 km from S.Angelo. The nearly 24 hectares of vineyards have an outstanding geographic location and are related to an exceptionally high-quality soil, which has led to the production of premium grapes and the best Brunello di Montalcino wines. The estate faces the Maremma sea breeze, and the open vineyards have a special microclimate that is distinctly different from other areas of Montalcino, including less rainfall and no fog. The vineyards have an average altitude of 350 meters, which is ideal for growing Sangiovese, the only grape variety cultivated at the estate. Lisini initially gained fame for producing high-quality extra virgin olive oil, as the grapes and olives are grown in the same terroir.
As early as the 16th century, the noble Lisini-Clementi family were engaged in the wine business in Montalcino, with around 150 hectares of their own land surrounding the farmhouse. This family had an important role in the medical and military fields. In the early 1700s, Captain Silvio Clementi lived in the Palazzo Pecci in Montalcino and acquired several properties nearby, allowing the lineage to continue until the death of the last great-grandson in 1983. Few family wineries can boast such a long-lasting ownership like Lisini.
In 1846, the Clementi and Lisini families were united through the marriage of Francesca Clementi and Lodovico Lisini, leading to the distribution of the Lisini family's property in the Chianti region of Radda to the Clementi family's estate in S.Angelo. Lodovico and Caterina Ciampolini had four children: Maria, Elina, Alessandro, and Giovangualberto. After Lodovico's death in 1950, the winery was handed down to his enterprising daughter Elina, who managed it from 1962 until her passing in 2009. Her dedication and unique passion were key to Lisini's success. In 1967, Elina co-founded the Consorzio del Brunello di Montalcino with 24 other wineries, becoming the organization's host, a significant bet in an era when the unprofitable wine industry was often abandoned in favor of industrialization. Currently, her nephews Carlo, Lorenzo, and Ludovica are the estate's successors, carrying on the ancient traditions.
Tasting notes:
WE92 Wine Enthusiast
Thanks to the impressive complexity here, you can easily attribute a long list of adjective to describe the nose of this elegant Brunello. Cherry, cassis, church incense, lavender and dried violets all come to mind. Tight tannins and a touch of astringency will soften with more time in the bottle.
