As the owner and winemaker of Castello di Ama, Marco Pallanti has dedicated his entire 25-year winemaking career to his vineyards in Chianti. He has worn many hats, including serving as the chairman of the Consorzio del Vino Chianti Classico (Chianti Classico Wine Consortium) from 2006 to 2012. This association unites the producers in the Chianti Classico region, with the mission of promoting the Chianti Classico appellation, improving and monitoring wine quality, and preventing counterfeiting or fraud.
One of the hallmarks of the Consorzio is the prominent black rooster label affixed to the neck of Chianti Classico bottles, signifying that the producer is a member of the association. A program called "Chianti 2000" has been in place for nearly two decades, focused on planting superior Sangiovese clones and promoting modern viticultural practices to gradually improve wine quality.
The Chianti Classico Gran Selezione category was introduced in 2014, denoting wines made entirely from the producer's own estate-grown grapes. To earn the Gran Selezione designation, the wines must pass sustainability tests and be evaluated by the tasting committee. Castello di Ama's first wine to receive the Chianti Classico Gran Selezione rating was the 2010 vintage of their San Lorenze of Vintage, which was also ranked as the 6th best wine of 2014 by Wine Spectator magazine.
